Often times, you may find it hard to stick to healthy choices at work? You spend at least 8 hours in a chair in front of a computer, five days a week. You try to meet deadlines, attend meetings, forward emails and receive several calls. This alone can take a toll on your body. Think about the eye strains, the candies that co-workers leave invitingly at your desk and the tension neck syndrome. All of these factors could affect your health negatively.
The adage that says “health is wealth” is not far-fetched. I hope you know the level of your productivity is greatly determined by your health status. You may say “I don’t really have the time to watch my health at work” This is common among working professionals.
Here are 6 tips that will help you stay healthy and in shape at work:
- Eat sensibly
One of the mistakes most office goers make is that they eat whatever comes their way. Maybe you are stuck in a particular task and you feel hunger pangs. Your colleague offered you some calorific treat or junk food and you began to munch on it. This is really not healthy. You must learn self-control to pay attention to what you eat for your main meals.
Before leaving home, eat a filling breakfast. You can lunch on some fruits or salads but ensure you are not doing it at your office desk. You can snack on nuts granola bars or healthy smoothies when you are hungry. It will keep you satisfied without giving the sluggish effect that junk foods will give you.
- Drink plenty of water
When you have so much to do at work, you can easily lose track of how much water you are drinking a day. However, it is important that you stay hydrated throughout the day. This will prevent drowsiness and sluggishness.
Ensure you drink between and eight glasses of water every day. You may need to consume more, depending on the nature of your work and the climatic condition in your region.
- Take less of caffeinated beverages
It can be hard avoiding caffeinated beverages completely, but try to limit the amount you take. Caffeine can make you crash later in the day. So, you can simply limit it to just a cup of coffee every morning.
- Take frequent breaks
Don’t try to overwork yourself. I know you want to rush up so you can leave the office on time. But, this does not mean you should sit behind that computer screen for hours.
Do you know that taking a break can actually make you more productive? So, don’t think it would simply waste your time. When you don’t take a break, you can become mentally lethargic and less creative. So ensure you take a break from your desk every now and again for a few minutes.
- Keep good hygiene
Don’t joke about your hygiene if you love your health. You can keep a hand sanitizer close to you always, especially when it may not always be possible to step away from your desk every time. This can keep you germ-free.
- Learn to manage stress
You can be exhausted especially when you have to juggle several roles and responsibilities. However, you can make easier on yourself by learning how to manage stress.
One way you can beat stress is finding enjoyable things to do – spend some time with family and friends; read some good books, watch movies and go for some workout sessions at the gym.
